Last spring, audiences, critics, and award voters were enthralled with the Off-Broadway musical In the Heights, a musical portrait of Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood. So it wasn't completely unexpected that adventurous producers Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller, and Jill Furman have brought the show to Broadway, where it begins previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on February 14, in advance of its official opening on March 9. TheaterMania took our video crew to the show's last month, where we caught up with such excited cast members as Mandy Gonzalez, Christopher Jackson, and Priscilla Lopez, and gained some valuable insights from creator-star Lin-Manuel Miranda, director Thomas Kail, book writer Quiara Hudes, and choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler about this magical and challenging journey to the Great White Way.
The fall Broadway season kicks into high gear with Equus, All My Sons, A Man for All Seasons, The Seagull, To Be Or Not To Be, and 13. Off-Broadway fare includes Romantic Poetry, Irena's Vow, and Fifty Words, while the New York Musical Theatre Festival is back for its fifth year.
