The full schedule has been announced for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival & Philly Fringe, the sixteen day festival of original and innovative live performances from Philadelphia and around the world. This year's festival will incorporate the work of almost 200 artists over the course of 16 days of performances, which will be seen by over 45,000 people.
Highlights include Barrymore Award-winner Emmanuelle Delpech-Ramey's take on Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, an updated version of the classical Greek drama set in the urban amphitheater FDR skate park, Oedipus at FDR, September 4-6; EgoPo Productions' staging of Georg Büchner's Woyzeck at the German Society of Pennsylvania, the tale of an everyman who suffers in a world of sinister doctors, absurd military officers, and faithless lovers; and Disco Descending by Karen Getz at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, August 28-September 7, which sets the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice against a Saturday Night Fever backdrop.
In a line up that includes poetry, dance, visual art, and much more, other highlights include bodies in urban spaces, September 5-6, Willi Dorner's free, traveling outdoor dance event that will use urban spaces to create a trail of live human sculpture; and Sweet By-and-By, August 29-September 13, a Pig Iron Theatre Company & Teater Sláva collaboration about Joe Hill, a Swedish immigrant who well known on California picket lines as a union organizer and radical songwriter.
